Are your windows safe?
According to a new study published in Pediatrics, almost 17,000 children were hurt by window blinds between 1990 and 2015. Though most injuries were minor, according to the study, almost 300 children died. When window cords are within reach, it only takes a few seconds for a child to become accidentally tangled. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists windows and window blinds as one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes today.
Thankfully, there is a solution.
Cordless and automated window treatment products provide a greater peace of mind for homes with children. Automated window treatments, such as honeycomb shades, come with a motorized operating system that eliminates window cords altogether and adds a level of convenience with a programmable remote control. Both hardwired and battery-operated options are available on most products. This innovative design is a sleek and versatile option that will not only complement any home interior but provide a safe environment for children.
Here are a few of the recommended window treatments options that we offer:
- Cordless Honeycomb Shades
- Motorized with Remote Control Honeycomb Shades
- Cordless Sheer Shades
- Motorized with Remote Control Horizontal Sheer Shades
- Cordless Roman Shades
- Motorized with Remote Control Roman Shades
- Motorized with Remote Control Roller Shades
The industry is moving forward with a new industry standard proposal that would make cordless blinds the only option available in retail stores and online. A spokesman for the Window Covering Manufacturers Association said the proposed industry standard will have input from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Commission called the standard, “a major step forward in protecting children.”

From heating systems through the cold winter months to cooling appliances during a heat wave, it takes a lot of energy to power our daily lives. With the help of automated shading solutions, building owners and homeowners can reduce their energy costs significantly.
Electric lighting uses more than 15% of all energy in the country, according to studies by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Energy Information Agency. By using an automated shading system, you can ensure more energy savings over time. Automated shades can be programmed with timers or sensors to automatically provide the right amount of sunlight exposure 24 hours a day. Motorized shading systems can also integrate with HVAC systems, using sensors to take advantage of opportunities to save energy. When the heat from the sunlight reaches a certain threshold, shades lower and reflect the sun’s heat away from the window, causing a cooling effect. An automated window treatment system will keep your building or home at the most comfortable temperature without increasing energy costs, and could potentially save you 10-15% on monthly electric bills.
Electricity production is one of the largest contributors to pollution in the United States. Its production affects environmental issues such as water quality, waste management, and industrial air pollution. Natural lighting is an important tool that can help homeowners and business owners decrease their carbon footprint and reduce fluorocarbon’s devastating effect on the environment. Automated shades, in tandem with smart lighting and building control systems, help to effectively manage natural daylight, which is a vital step towards sustainability.
By partnering with Ver-Tex to provide the latest in automated window treatment solutions, business owners and homeowners will be able to find the perfect solution to making their residential and commercial buildings even more sustainable.
